Mountain Biking, Tahoe, Truckee, Vans, adventure and creativity. My name is Patrick and after 35 years of working in the Bay Area I moved with my wife to Truckee California. We both recently retired and are now enjoying much of what the mountain life has to offer. This channel helps me share some of the areas we, and our friends, enjoy together. It’s such a beautiful area with many hidden gems and the videos shown here should help others find areas they too can enjoy. I also share a bit about myself and my experience to keep things interesting.
Testing the Fox 38 and Ohlins 38 on the trail - should you switch?
We test these two top line front forks on EMtb's to see if one stands out above the other. Smooth bumps, turns, and rocky sections. How much of a difference does the fork manufacturer make.

2 Beavers and a Bear and 2 Bridges Trail - Truckee Tahoe
It baffles me why people always complaining about cable noise
Hi, can I ask you how tall you are since you chose size L? I'm also considering buying and I'm 175 cm tall
I am 176 cm tall with long legs and arms.
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee Thanks, another question. since I'm undecided between the M and L size. measurement of the horse person I have 80 cm and arms 75 cm. What do you recommend based on your size? thank you
The distance from fingertip to fingertip when my arms are spread wide is 183 cm which means I have longer arms than normal. This usually means that I would need a smaller bike than my height dictates. However, I am very happy with the Large YT. For comparison, the Large YT is almost the exact same size as the Medium Canyon (or even slightly smaller in terms of reach). YT is very good about answering questions so I would suggest calling them, but I would not get hung up on the label they put on the sizes and instead go with their recommendation (by calling or that listed on their site). I think it is accurate.
Trying to choose between a YT Decoy and a Trek Rail 7. Any advice?
I have not done much research on the Trek Rail but have always liked their bikes. They have a great dealer network and I think bought out many of the local shops so that is an advantage because these bikes do demand a lot of mechanical attention. Otherwise the specs look similar though I’ve not done a full side by side. For me, the smaller battery would be a big disadvantage since I live and ride in the mountains and the 720 is about as low as I’d want to go with 900 being ideal for my longer rides. Other area’s or riders have no problem with a smaller battery. I’d say, if your OK with battery size, then choose the bike that will gets you the most excited and if you have a Trek Dealer/shop near you that you know will support you and you prefer to have them do the work, then go with Trek. I do most of my own work and have good shops that work on both my YT and Canyon so I’m OK with these bikes.
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it! My budget is $3500 to $4000, so I'd have to get the Core 1 or Core 2 if I were to get a YT Decoy. That's why I'm leaning toward the Trek Rail 7 since I can get it for $3300 new and I feel like that's a steal.
That’s a great price. You love the bike I’m sure!
Love both front and back. I’ll do a comparison but bottom line: better aggressive performance in front and smooth action from the rear spring. This is Fox vs Ohlin.
How is that Öhlins suspension treating you? Comparison vs the rockshox?
Oh Lin’s have been VERY impressive, especially with aggressive riding. That fork does everything well - better than the similar Fox, and I love the feel of the spring on this bike., The Rockshox suspension we have is not the higher spec but since they are very similarly built, I would expect them to feel like the Fox. The Ohlins have taken a different approach with the three air chambers, and though some feel it is harsh in little stuff I notice the exact opposite, especially in small fast braking bumps. I’ve used the settings YT recommended and they seem spot on for me.
Well how many miles did it last?
1500 miles to failure. Probably about 700 miles is when it should have been replaced.
Sweet video!! Some big trees down! Looks like fun
What do you think of the Core 4 vs the Spectral ON CFR? The CFR is on a pretty good sale right now. I don't have experience with either brand or know anyone who does. I really want the Ohlins suspension and Hayes brakes. But the bigger battery on the CFR is also tempting. Also considering the Transition Repeater, because I'm local to Bellingham.
I think you have hit on the main differences. The 900 Whr battery in the Canyon is necessary for 3 hours + of actual ride time here in Tahoe. However, I rarely go out that long. When I do, I take the Canyon. The brakes and the Suspension on the YT are superior, and I do love that rear spring. The YT has caused me a bit of grief chasing the rattles and squeaks though I think that is now solved, but the canyons implementation of battery charging is problematic - the magnetic cover is fragile over time - vs YT which has a dedicated port. Though decision - they are both excellent bikes and you can’t go wrong with either.
@roadlesstraveledtruckee I'm about 230-240 geared up so the bigger the battery the better for me. But I do like the geo of the YT better, and especially the brakes. What kind of climbing time do you get out of your 720WH?
I feel no major difference in bike handling from the geometry and you can address the brakes by putting a 220 rotor in front. My last ride with the YT was 20 miles, 2500 ft of climbing, 2 hr ride time, all on Boost and ran it almost to empty. I’m 150 lbs but do ride aggressively probably like most people with these bikes.
This worked great for me. Thanks!
I have a decoy myself I found a big thing that helped with cable rattle was to put a little slip solution on the cable grommets to get them to go inside the frame further then put a small zip the on the grommet to keep it from pulling out of the frame.
Great idea. I didn't think about lubricating the grommets, they are hard to get to push into the frame. I did, however, do the same thing as you and zip tied them to the cables. Thanks for the idea!
😂😂😂😂
How did you swap out the handlebar? I can’t get an answer from canyon support. They told me I ‘may’ have to order some headset/spacer parts before I can add my own handlebar due to the integrated handlebar headset combo. It’s been almost a month and still can’t get a straight answer.
My 2023 Canyon Spectral On does not have an integrated handlebar/headset so I don’t have a good answer for you.
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee I see. I have a 2023 as well, CFR though, so I guess that is the difference.
Great video, thank you Do you prefer this on the Caynon?
Both are great and have different advantages. I’ll post something on that soon.
Clean, lube the lower and upper main PVT axles and lock tight the pinch bolts every month. It only takes a few mins and is the best preventative maintenance for a reliable EMTB. I feel, because of the extra heat and weight of the ebike axle grease seems to deteriorate very fast leading to binding and/or loosening axels. If you allow the excels to bind or loosen the nock on effect is fast wearing of the DU bushing and/ or the shock eyelet bushings.
This is off topic, but do you have some sort of bell attached to your bikes, after watching many of your vids, I’m thinking is this for bears ? 🤠
Yes, it is for bears. Hopefully it scares them before I see them but I’ve encounter two in 6 months, both already running the other direction. I’m told I need to silence these during videos but I’m conflicted because 1) I’ve tuned it out so I forget it’s going, 2) I want to set a good example. Thoughts?
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee Safety must be your number one concern when you ride in the beautiful location you reside in, I think the bells are a good idea, you never want to roll up and startle a bear, that might not end well, especially if there are cubs around, i enjoy your channel ! 🤠
Thank you Jim!
I’m sure you will be fine with that. You’re kinda in the middle and the large will probably be more stable plus you can get the 900 Whr battery in it.
Did it work?
Yes, noise gone, should have made that clear.
How tall are you ? Considering the YT and the Canyon but sizing is confusing, Thanks ! 🤠
I’m 5-9, but…. I have an ape index of 3” and long arms actually mean a lower RAD measurement (less reach sort of). All very confusing and sometimes contradictory advice out there but bottom line for me is that I’m happy with the size I have in both bikes. Medium Canyon and Large YT. The two bikes sizes are equivalent in my opinion.
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee thanks for the info, I’m 5-8 and thinking of getting the Canyon in size medium, hope that will feel right for me, they recommend a small
What happened to the canyon spectral?
I still have it, friends/family and I ride both. I’ll be posting a few videos on the bike shortly. Was that your question?
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee I just picked up the spectral CFR. Should arrive on Tuesday, and am hoping it’s killer. I’m a little concerned about the ep801, but the 900 wh battery is key for the climbing around here
Excellent choice! 900 Whr battery is a must for longer rides and climbs especially with the 801 which has more power. You will love that motor and that bike.
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee oh man that’s awesome to hear. I can’t wait to get it out on the trails. Thanks for your videos, they helped seal the deal on the Canyon.
@@adamgriffin7055’love your videos (commenting on YT) really convinced me to buy a canyon.’ 🤣
Weird got it now
I don't seem to have audio. Don't know if anyone else has the same problem?
Can you make a video on spring replacement.
Sure. Might be a few days.
Man idk how you can stand that bell
Yea, I’ve had that comment before and I know what you mean. Yesterday I scared my second bear down the trail. They hear me before I see them. It reminds me why I have the bell, and I honestly tune it out now - though I can’t tune out the slightest rattle of a bike part. The bell has the added advantage of alerting runners and other trail users too so, in retrospect, I would recommend one for anyone riding on a popular multi-use trail system. Thanks for “listening/watching…”
the Ep8 is a solid motor. I have 2900 miles. No issues. I ride everyday.
Great to know. My first one had 1000 miles and was only replaced because of a connector problem, second one has about 500 and going strong. Glad to know it’s solid!
Do you prefer the YT or Spectral on? I'm on my third battery on the Canyon due to the casing cracking. So was thinking of getting a YT
Lots of positives about the YT including the way the battery connects to the motor and the way the charger connects to the charging port. For the price, the YT comes well equipped as well. I have the core 4 and the suspension and brakes are superior to the Canyon CF8. The CF8 was $1000 less when I bought it but the better suspension and better brakes alone make the YT a better choice I think.
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee That's great, thank you. If I can sell my Canyon I think I will get the core 3 👍
Any other motor is better that the shimano
sure thing dummy
With the Shimano app you can adjust the amount of assist, timing, and sensitivity to input - to a limit. We had them all maxed out. One thing you cannot adjust is how long it stays on after you stop putting pressure on the pedal. Seems like a software thing but the newer motor stays on longer (maybe .5 sec) and is more sensitive to initial input. Downside is you can loop the bike if you are not careful and be taken by surprise when motor does not immediately shut down) takes a few rides and good brake work to be comfortable with this but ultimately is better in all situations I think (climbing, sharp corners, clearing obstacles, etc)
Great job! Nice test, I'm curious, because I have no clue, can the amount of time the power stays on after peddle stroke stops, be adjusted? It seems some much older bikes the motor stays on one to two strokes after you stop peddling. And the modern bikes have more of a shut off immediately when you stop peddling. Also do you think there is any downside to the power staying on momentary after peddle stroke. I'm starting to think, a switch to keep it on a moment in technical sections then off again.... maybe just always on.
Looks sick man. Ride it to Full Belly Deli for lunch
Hey, you know it - they make the best sandwich of any place I know! Hey, have you ridden Martis Peak area? Awesome trails which will probably only get better with Donkey Town closing down for forest maintenance for 3 years.
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee No but I will try it out thanks man. I just had a knee replacement a few months ago and am feeling great. Just got my Northstar pass so super excited.🤘🔥
There are rumors about a new Decoy model coming up
Interesting. I am very happy with the current one. The EP801 motor is a great improvement over the EP8 for climbing. I’ll show this in my next video.
Really? When are they saying it'll drop?
Valuable resource for anyone considering purchasing the bike or exploring eMTB trails 👍 Thanx Millions! Amazing ❤
Wonderful feedback, thank you. You make doing these worthwhile!
Helpful tips here! I haven't noticed any cable rattling on my bike yet, but will keep an ear out for it. I ordered a new coil that was actually 2 sizes stiffer than what the Large came with. Also don't like the matchmaker for the dropper post lever where it attaches to the brake clamp. I wonder if there's a way to change it out?
Thanks Ryan!
Good vids man, I will try some of you rattling fixes.. I'm loving mine got it in Dec and have been going hard on it..
Awesome, I’m looking forward to spending lots of time on this bike this summer.
On the E Mountain Bike if your motor doesn’t have zero Kayden support that’s a very big issue. I would never ever by the Shimano mobile. Why the Yamaha motor and I guarantee you’ll never wanna go back to the Shimano ever again
Well I have a Yamaha. The gentleman that made the video has already stated he was not fond of the low engaging hub. Even with an onyx hub, which has instantaneous engagement, the best you can hope for is 52 poe with the Yamaha. With the Shimano motor and a Onyx Hub you will have true instantaneous engagement. I've had my Yamaha motor Replaced in less than 1 year, 2 buddy's with Brose motors had their motors replaced, none of my buds with shimano have needed to warranty their motors. As far as I know, Brose and shimano are the only full power motors currently produced that still offer instantaneous engagement. I am not a fan of the motors that have less than instantaneous engagement.
I think it's luck of the draw, like getting anything off the shelf, there are some goods and some bads. We've got 16 Yamahas in our group and not one motor replacement in the group, we have multiple😅 specialized group and they've all had nothing but Motor problems. I think it's all luck.
Dude you didn't mention the headset that limits the steering? I have 2 friends with that bike and both are not fans of the steering limiter, though we do like riding tighter trails.
Oh, interesting. Haven’t noticed that yet. Now I’ll pay attention. Thanks, I think…
I just checked and it’s the same as my Canyon so probably why I didn’t notice. That and I’d probably go over the bars if I tried turning as sharp as you… thanks for checking out the video.
The purpose is to prevent the fork from hitting the bike and also pulling our the cables.
Hey guys, yes the Knock block is shitty. Made it feel like a DH bike w a dual crown fork.. I have an XL (normally ride a L) and I removed the headset, good bye. I replaced it with a works components 1 deg angle set.. I made it 1 degree slacker then put the bike in the high position for more clearance and a perfect 64 deg HA.. Plenty of clearance and no more limitations... I think it would work on a Large as well..
Wow, I like the place where you live man! It is beautiful out there!
Thanks, and 100’s of miles of Mtb trails off the doorstep. Wasn’t really something I knew about when we moved here so can’t believe our luck!
How are you liking the bike? I'm close to pulling the trigger on the YT Decoy Core 5.
I do like the bike, yes. I plan to publish more videos about it, one in the next couple days but bottom line is I think it is probably the best you can get in that price range. I do like the fox suspension, especially the 38 forks, and the free shift function would be awesome so I think the Core 5 will be great. Let me know how you like it if you get it. I don’t think you will be disappointed. My only complaint so far, and this will be the case with all the Decoy’s, is getting the cables to stop rattling in the frame has been a challenge. I’m sure I will eventually get it but at the moment, when the trail starts getting rough, the cables are clearly rattling in the frame.
I was put off buying the Decoy a few years ago because of the sizing. Their large size was too short in the top tube and their XL was too long in the seat tube for my liking. It’s nice to see YT have improved those numbers for the 2024 models as they have always been good value. Oh, and the improved battery is a huge bonus too, 504wh was laughable.
Thanks for the comment. Both of those items deserve more discussion so I think I’ll add my 2 cents in future videos. I’m conflicted on sizing but do like how this bike feels. The battery would have been a non starter at anything less than the 720 as you say.
My bike came recently and the box was also pretty damaged with a large hole in it. Fortunately nothing broken or missing. Video on my channel. Love the bike so far though.
Interesting, Ill check it out. Glad you love the bike though!
The core 4 doesn't even come in white and is clearly silver online. The water bottle is also clearly plastic, if you even look up the water bottle on their site, it states plastic.
Both good choices.
Those problems are called quality issue. Bike costs big money and still you just can't build it and start enjoying.
Yes, quality is important.
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee I think quality is THE thing. Been riding Santa Cruzes for years. Even years of riding with one, zero problems. if they can'T fix quality issues, it's pretty soon bye bye. People do watch these videos and very often choose their purchase based on them. nowdays bad bike is bad for business.
Looks like a sweet bike man. I have a Canyon torque e. This is a good one you got. Do you ever ride Northstar or the flume tail. I am in your area too.
Torque looks like a great bike too. I’m in Truckee. I don’t ride Northstar except to get to other trails since I live very close in Truckee. I’ve not taken the eMtb over to flume trial yet. Still working my way that direction with all the trail exploring I’ve been doing - there is just so much great riding. Some great trail right across 267 from Northstar - unsanctioned but well built.
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee Right on man keep up the good work
Nice! I’m looking at getting a YT Decoy too. I live over at the north end of Dollar Creek Trail where it ends at Fulton Crescent Drive. I hope I see you out, I’d like to see that bike before I buy one.
Have friends over the next several days but I am out riding most days if your in the Truckee area later next week/weekend.
Don’t forget that that Shimano motor when disengaged also rattles
I think I am starting to hear that now that I’ve quieted everything else. 90% less rattling now but something remains, and only when not peddling - unlike before. That’s probably it, thanks!
bike looks fantastic!!
I agree - love the yellow Ohlins highlights!
YT spending all their money on brand ambassadors and neglecting RND
Or they are taking the benefit of scale and passing it down to you. I’d rather not pay another extra 1000 for geo that doesn’t need changed
@@carterschichtel9678 You can get a Canyon for the same price with much more modern geo and Bosch motor instead of Shimano, which are a huge plus!
bro that bike has not changes since 2021 lol
I had to cable tie some fixings in the frame/battery compartment to get rid of a rattle. Bike now 5 years old and 25k km without a rattle.
So you ordered “Liquid Metal” and expected it to be NOT metallic in color?
No, I’m more stupid than that. I don’t think I even checked what the name of the color was. I think I like the “Liquid Metal” color more now though. The cool color name is just a bonus…
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee 🤪 makes sense. Either color is good though.
